66 Tutorial

Needed

24 card deck (aces down to the 9s); two players, pen and paper for scorekeeping

Deal

Six cards get dealt to each player in sets of three. The top card of the remaining deck gets flipped up and partially placed under the deck. The suit of the flipped card is the trump suit for the round.

Objective

The objective of the game is to be the first player to win seven game points. A game point is won by being the first player to score 66 cards points in a round. Card points are scored by winning tricks containing certain cards, or by melding a marriage of a king and a queen in the same suit.

Card Rank

Highest to lowest - Ace, 10, King, Queen, Jack, 9

Game Play

The game begins with the non-dealer playing the first card into a trick. The dealer plays any card to the trick. The player with the highest ranking trump card wins the trick. If no trump cards get played, the player with the highest ranking card in the lead suit wins the trick.

The player that wins the trick will draw the top card from the deck. The player that loses the trick will draw the next top card from the deck. The player that won the trick will lead the next trick. Play continues in this way until all cards have been drawn from the remaining deck.

If a player has the king and queen in the same suit, the player can score for the marriage by leading one of the cards (and showing the other) after winning a trick.

During the last six tricks, players must play a card in the suit that was lead whenever possible.

Scoring

Card points are kept as a running total throughout the round. The round ends immediately after a player gets 66 or more card points. The player to score 66 or more card points wins one game point. If all cards are played, the winner of the last trick is awarded ten points. The first player to seven game points wins the game.

Card Point Values

  • Each Ace: 11 points

  • Each 10: 10 points

  • Each King: 4 points

  • Each Queen: 3 points

  • Each Jack: 2 points

  • Trump marriage: 40 points

  • Non-trump marriage: 20 points

  • Last trick: 10 points

Rules

  • After winning a trick, a player holding the trump suited 9 can exchange it for the exposed trump card under the deck.

  • A player that gets 66 card points before the opponent gets 33 card points is awarded two game points.

  • A player that gets 66 card points before the opponent wins a trick is awarded three game points.

  • Players that think they can get to 66 points with the cards in hand can close the draw deck. Closing the draw deck means no more cards are drawn, and the last six tricks are played with players following suit, if possible. If the player that closed the deck gets 66 points, the player scores game points as previously explained. If the player that closes the deck fails to get 66 points, the opponent scores two game points.
